Additional Dose mRNA COVID-19 vaccine

Third doses: The Virginia Department of Health has adopted the CDC and FDA recommendation to offer a third dose for those with moderate or severely weakened immune systems. This additional dose applies to people who have: Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood. Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system. Received a stem cell transplant within the last two years or are taking medication to suppress the immune system. Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome). Advanced or untreated HIV infection. Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune system. If you are unsure if you qualify for a third dose, reach out to your health care provider for further assistance.

Why Do I need a Third Dose: Data has shown that those with moderate or severe immuno-compromising conditions, compared to those with normal immune systems, may not have developed enough antibody levels after two doses of the COVID-19

Vaccinations to defend them against the virus. This third dose is only for those that had the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine at this time. These individuals are more likely to get COVID-19 and get severely ill (breakthrough case). They are also at greater risk of having symptoms for a longer period and they are more likely to spread COVID-19 to close contacts.

Where can I get a Third Dose: Anyone meeting the criteria, and after 28 days of their last COVID-19 vaccination can reach out to a local pharmacy or their health care provider to ask for their third dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Additionally, The PWHD has been offering a third dose at the Health District clinics. Call to check availability.
